Oral myofunctional therapy from Williamsburg Center for Myofunctional and Oral Health is designed to address some of the behaviors that can lead to long term negative oral health consequences. By correcting the bad habits early, speech and chewing or eating problems can be reduced and dental health problems may be avoided.
What Can Myofunctional Therapy Improve?
- Increased awareness of tongue position: Habits such as tongue thrusting, or pushing the tongue harshly against the back of the upper front teeth, can cause speech impairments such as slurring and lisping
- Force the muscles of the face, jaw and lips to work together: When the muscles in the face don’t work in harmony, speech issues can occur. It is difficult to articulate words appropriately when the muscles in the face are weak. Restoring the coordination of these muscles allows a child to gain control of their pronunciation and have long term positive outcomes.
- Improve bite and jaw alignment: By addressing the underdevelopment of facial muscles early, it is possible to adjust the jaw alignment in a child or teen. This adjustment may keep a patient from developing an over or underbite, or it may help limit the severity of the bite issue.
