SPEECH ISSUES
Myofunctional Therapy for Speech Issues
Speech issues are another common occurrence that is often caused by weak lips, tongue and cheek muscles. Articulation of words and sounds can be difficult and without intervening through therapy, poor speech and articulation may not improve. Speech therapists often employ myofunctional therapy techniques to help strengthen muscles. At Williamsburg Myofunctional & Oral Health, our goal is to restore the proper function and coordination of all muscle groups thereby improving speech and articulation in children and teens. Myofunctional therapy for speech can treat and cure the following issues:
- Open mouth resting posture
- Tongue thrust during speaking, chewing or swallowing
- Uncoordinated food manipulation
- Drooling beyond age 3
- Lisps and s, z, sh, ch, and j sounds
- Slow movement of tongue while speaking

If you sense that your child’s speech is not developing as it should, Williamsburg Myofunctional & Oral Health therapists can help! Our myofunctional therapists will assess your child’s overall oral health and development and offer exercises to begin the process of reconditioning the muscles that will improve articulation.
