Perhaps the most common sleep disorder is obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea causes abnormal breathing patterns in which your breath becomes very shallow and even may stop briefly. Breathing usually returns with a loud snore or gasp of air. This type of sleep disorder can seriously impact your overall health. Some of the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Dry mouth or throat in the morning
  • Trouble concentrating during the day
  • Irritability

Sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea are usually the result of weak muscles in the oropharynx (or mouth and throat). Weak muscles can disrupt airflow and cause snoring. A weak tongue can fall into the back of the throat during sleep causing obstructive sleep apnea. Myofunctional therapy for sleep disorders targets the weak muscles of the tongue and oropharynx. The treatment is designed to strengthen the weak muscles and restore the proper tongue position during sleep as well as an open airway with optimal air flow.

If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, chances are your doctor recommended a CPAP machine (continuous positive airway pressure) or even surgery. Myofunctional therapy for sleep apnea offers a completely non-invasive, risk-free and inexpensive alternative to the aforementioned options. At Williamsburg Myofunctional & Oral Health, our therapists have been successful in getting patients off of the CPAP machine.
